Building Your Portfolio: Models

 • When building a modeling portfolio you are doing more than just taking pretty photos. You are working to great a body of work that will inspire directors, casting directors, art directors, and photographers to want to hire you.

Part of setting everything up for your portfolio to look amazing is to get a team of great artists to work together in your behalf. Your photographer is the key person in this partnership. The other talent that you need to help you show yourself in the very best light is a hair and a make up artist. Sometimes these two talents will be different people and sometimes they will be a single artist.

What is required for a great finished look is not something to leave to a friend or someone else who “knows” make up. I myself did make up for years and I know my way around an eyebrow pencil and a hair brush. I don’t do make up and hair anymore, but I can tell you, there is a difference and good make up and hair people understand the unique way a camera sees your face.

Over the years I have developed working relationships with some of Utah’s finest. While this list is not by any means a complete list of the people I would recommend, they are some of the very best.

Tammy Taylor-Cooper is a licences cosmetologist and I love the way she makes eyes come alive. https://www.facebook.com/tammy.taylorcooper?fref=ts

Kristen Packard does wigs and make up for Utah Opera and she has done a number of my clients. Her work for me has been with younger teenagers. https://www.facebook.com/kristen.packard.7?ref=ts&fref=ts

Heather Shelton has done several faces for me and she is the 2013 Salt Lake Make-up Artist of the Year. https://www.facebook.com/colormebeautifulbyheathershelton?fref=ts

Laa Hernando-Guanzon is also amazing. https://www.facebook.com/laarni

Most of these make-up artists will either arrange for you to come to their location or will show up on our location to work with you. Their rates will vary. I do not include make-up or hair in my prices. Be prepared to spend $40 to $100 depending on what is wanted and if they are asked to stay for the whole session.

 • Seek variety. You want your comp card and your portfolio to be a tool that will help art directors and others see different possibilities for your face and body type.

 • Other things to consider: Once you have a good start on a modeling portfolio you will want to create an online profile where you can add new work and share your portfolio to prospective clients, photographers, agencies, etc. I can help you build a turn-key website and get one started if desired. I can also point you toward other great people to help you get your modeling started.

 • Zed Card/Comp Card

This is your calling card. Much like a business man/woman will leave a business card, a model will leave the Comp Card with people he/she hopes will call her for auditions. Whether it be an agency, an advertising firm, a casting agency, or other company they desire to do work for. But the Comp Card does more than the business card. It gives a quick visual representation of the model, vital statistics, and contact/hiring information. You want a main image on one side and then some smaller images on the other with your info. Each image should have a different look and each image should sell you on its own merits.
